Rei-ki (Divine Life Force Energy) is an embodied and prayerful practice of laying hands on or over the main chakras (energy centers) of the body, in order to bring balance and awareness to the relationship between body, emotions, and spirit. Reiki is channeled through the practitioner, not from her, to the recipient. This happens in a safe, meditative space where individuals are invited to relax, open, and notice what they are experiencing. They are invited to receive what is needed, and release that which is no longer serving them.
Those who receive Reiki will be invited to rest on a massage table during the session. Unlike massage, the recipient is fully clothed. Wearing soft, comfortable clothing may be helpful.
I was attuned by a Reiki master who is also a community herbalist. As part of my training, I was taught the practice of smudging with sage. Burning sage can clarify the air and help clear negative energy around us. Therefore, sage is used ceremonially before and/or during the session. I also use sweetgrass during the session. Sweetgrass also serves to cleanse, but in a way that invites the wanted energy to stay. It is important to note that sage and sweetgrass ceremonies have long been part of indigenous culture. It is with humility and care that I use these precious plants in my practice. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where did Reiki originate? The practice of Reiki originated in Japan through Mikao Usui. I have been attuned as a practitioner in the Usui practice through a Reiki Master.
What is attunement? A Reiki Master can teach other individuals to practice Reiki. There are three levels of attunement, by which the Reiki Master uses an energetic process which allows the student to become a conduit of the Reiki energy. Each level uses symbols to help activate and deepen the process of giving Reiki.
Where does the energy come from? Reiki is Divine (Rei) Life Force (Ki) Energy. The practitioner is not giving away their energy, nor are they taking on the energy of the client. Rather, the practitioner serves as a channel or conduit of the Reiki energy. The energy can often be sensed as heat as it flows from the hands of the practitioner through the chakras of the clients.
What happens during a Reiki session? There is no simple answer to this. Every session is different. Experiences can range from simply enjoying quiet relaxation to having visions and deep emotional responses or physical healing. However, most individuals do report experiencing a greater sense of balance and often are able to sleep better after a session. I trust the process - that what needs to happen will happen and will serve to support the journey.
What if I need to talk about what I experience? I always take time for clients to name any part of their experience or ask questions following a session. I may not have specific answers, but I can apply spiritual direction to help individuals notice what is there for them in a particular session.
What do I do after receiving Reiki? It’s helpful to tend to yourself afterward as you would after receiving a massage. The Reiki helps to clear negative energy and bring balance to individuals, so drinking a lot of water, taking a bath with Epsom salts, abstaining from alcohol, and rest are all recommended to allow the Reiki treatment to be most effective.
Am I clothed during the Reiki session? Yes, absolutely. It is recommended that clients wear soft, comfortable clothing during the session. I also always offer a light blanket to cover you and I tend to making the room a comfortable temperature.
Where do Reiki sessions take place? I have an office in my home where I meet with clients. The client lays on a massage table while the Reiki is administered, unless physical modifications are needed. However, I can also conduct Reiki sessions virtually. I even have international clients.
